Getting Healthy: Week 1

One week ago today I officially began working toward my goal of getting healthy.  In order for me to stay somewhat accountable, I will post my activities and stats every Thursday, which is my weigh-in day.

I have to say that this time around I am being purposeful. I don’t JUST want to lose weight, although I do want to lose it, I have other goals besides. I would like to be healthy and toned, not get winded at the slightest activity, not be that fat sedentary mom who always watches her kids but never participates in activities. And I want to start buying smaller sized clothing! :) Size 12 & 14 jeans are where I draw the line…. this time. I would like to draw the next line where single digit sizes end. I am working toward that.

I have come to really rely on my iTouch to keep me on track, and love the way that it helps me do that. iWatchr, I said before, is a fantastic program! I have been keeping pretty good track of my intake and activities with it. Some highlights from my week:

  • I went over my daily points a couple of times, but I didn’t eat all of my Bonus Points for the week, and they were reset today.
  • I went to the YMCA and worked out 4 times in the past week.
  • I joined the Ladies Workout at church. Our Youth Pastor’s wife is doing the Biggest Loser challenge using the BL DVDs. Those workouts are tough, but great! We just get together on Saturday mornings and work out together. This made FIVE days of the past 7 I did some physical exercise! This in itself is a record for me. And I haven’t died yet.
  • I switched to totally sugar free lattes. Not a huge issue since I only have maybe 2 or 3 per week, but my candy bar in a cup just became points-friendly! :)   Also, since I’m a daily tea drinker, and I like it SWEET, I switched my sugar to Stevia and that’s just fine too.
  • I lost 2.5lbs this week!

I am noticing that I am actually beginning to enjoy the exercise. I usually go between the treadmill, the ArcTrainer or elliptical, and the recumbent bike for my cardio.  Yesterday I tried out a Spinning Bike. WOW! I really LIKE those! SO smooth but totally simple. There aren’t a million lights and buttons and settings. You just get on the bike and go, and you can adjust the gears for resistence.  At this point I’m not using a lot of other machines except one that is for crunches and oblique work, which is a killer and I feel it the next day.  My main goal right now is to just get to a point where I’m able to keep moving for an extended period of time.  I have been jogging about a 16min. mile, because I have to switch off between jogging and walking. I would like to get to where I can jog a 15 min. mile without stopping, and then go better and faster than that. I enjoy the elliptical and the ArcTrainer a lot because guess what?  I can feel my glutes! I know it sounds funny, but I can! When I walk! They are in there! :D

And one last thought, which I Tweeted several days ago: Imagining myself thin & toned does not enable me to exercise as if I am. It’s a process!

But I sure do feel skinny after a workout!

(Note to self: Come up with a graphic for this series.)
